The Impact of Technology on the Furniture and Interior Design Industry: Jeff Carlson on Making Furniture Simple

Jeff Carlson is a man on a mission. Ever since the original idea to create My Resource Library, he has been focused on making things simpler and easier for customers to get what they need. As the furniture industry began to migrate away from panel systems and introduced tons of new ancillary products, it became difficult for dealers, designers and others to know what options were available. “That’s where My Resource Library really comes in as a benefit”, Jeff says, “Dealers know panel systems, but what they don’t know is ancillary products.” His organization was founded on the basic idea that complex things can be made simple. Of course, the message of making a complex thing simple aligned well with our organization.

My Resource Library has disrupted the traditional dealer/designer “Library” that held manufacturer’s product information (usually out of date) in binders on shelves. The virtual library is easy to update, easy to search and makes life much easier and less expensive for both dealers as well as manufacturers. Jeff and his team have been growing and transforming the industry over the past 8 years since MRL’s founding. His passion for the industry and making it better is always apparent. “I absolutely love this industry. So, but what really kills me about this industry is the number of people that make money because of the complexities that they’re creating in this industry. So, I would actually, and that’s what My Resource Library’s whole mission is to remove complexities in a very complex industry.”

Technology is changing the world all around us in so many different ways, and one of the most significant changes to the furniture industry was the creation of an online, virtual library. Jeff’s team has continued to push the envelope by adding more project-specific features and the coming integration of MRL products and 3D furniture design software. Technology continues to change all the various industries around us, and MRL is leading the charge in using technology to make a complex thing simple.

Jeff is presently working as a Principal of MRL and currently aims to improve the platform adding many more features that will surely help manufacturers.
